May your laughter come back.
May your light not extinguish.
May the fears recoil and the shadows run from you.
May your bed embrace you dry and soft.
May the hill hold your steps and see you run.
May the moon not call you in vain.
May your voice never more resound in echoes of walls, cold and hard, when you call for your mom.

LGBTQ Constitutionally Protected, declares the Supreme Court.

After an exhausting week of verbal racist attacks, violent threats, insults, and the daily dose of invitations to go back to where I come from, it was such a beautiful soothing balm to my heart to see this rainbow colored glimmer of hope.

This is a sign post, dear friends. We are walking the good path. Keep going! Keep going!

Never have I seen a sparrow stop in mid flight just after lifting skyward.

Neither shall we stop.

Take a moment to enjoy this brief respite in the storm, and take in the rainbow beauty announcing the world to come.

(Historic ruling: Supreme Court says LBTQ community enjoys constitutional protection against discrimination.)

Defund Now

“Defunding” doesn’t really mean a complete elimination of the police, but a radical reworking of its role and the amount of funding it gets.

The reasons given against this are reminiscent of the reasons empires give against accepting the independence of the colonies: that the savages won’t be able to manage themselves and achieve peace on their own.

Even if that were true, and it’s not, the system as it is—a systemic oppression against minorities—is untenable and inexcusable.

Defund the police. Redefine the role it plays and allocate resources away from violent repression and towards helping the growth of the community.

Why Calls for Unity Don’t Work for Democrats.

A big difference between the parties is that most Republicans are happy with their party, and winning is what matters. The Democratic Party is not as homogeneous. There’s a strong contingency that is very unhappy with their party. So, while the Republican hears “let go of your favorite candidate so we can get what we want as a group”, the progressive branch of the Democratic Party hearts “let go of the changes you want so we can elect the guy we want.”

To the center, it sounds like the message is the same, but to the left, it sounds wrong. Party unity can’t be achieved until the vision is shared. The republicans achieved this by going hard to the right. The Democratic leadership think they can keep their base and gain undecided moderates by staying around the center.

As a result, the left keeps feeling left out. The moment that best shows this difference is when during the last convention Sarah Silverman told “Bernie or bust” people they were ridiculous. No one bothered with that call for unity in the Republican side. “Lying Ted”, “small hands”, and all kinds of attacks and low blows are allowed, because in the end they rally around anyone who wins the popularity vote precisely because their agenda is homogeneous.

Democrats don’t have a unified vision, and so they demand the candidate is someone they can love. Unification is not possible. If they want that, they have to make sure all voices are heard. Most likely, a third party will necessarily emerge with a true left wing vision.

The Sovereignty of your Being

Every person has the absolute right to exist as they are. To imply that you are superior to them is to completely miss the point that “Every man and every woman is a star”.

Every person is a sovereign soul, of divine right and sacred origin. The implication that they need to adopt your customs, beliefs or appearance betrays your failure to grasp the most essential of metaphysical realizations.

Every person has the rights inherent to being human. To restrict these rights of Liberty only to a certain race, gender, nationality, age, physical condition, identity, or culture is to attempt to deny these rights as such.

So, carve, think, write, create, live, love, celebrate, mourn, look, travel, learn, and worship as you will.

Exercise the sovereignty of your being.

Understand that as these are your inalienable rights, so are they for all sentient beings everywhere.

God Fearing

The god-fearing are victims of their ignorance. Ignorance is not knowing who you truly are. Ignorant of their true nature, they believe the little gods of their imagination have created them. The more they fear, the more they channel the force of fear to create a world full of evidence that they are powerless. They become trapped by the power of their own ignorance. The gods they created are placed as guardians of their prison.

The free human being does not draw from the power of fear.

The people of knowledge, free from ignorance, do not hold guards to keep them trapped. They are free from belief, and free from fear.

A Note to the Person who Said It’s not a Big Deal to be Told to Go Back Where you Came From.

People like me are told those hateful words all the time. They are meant to make you feel less, and to get others to bully you. They are meant to make feel out of place, like your contribution doesn’t count, and like you will never be welcome in your own land.

It is a racist move precisely because of that intent. Yes, we all learn to live with it, to ignore it, and to continue being decent human beings.

Nonetheless, it hurts.

It hurts to see it being done to your children and the people you love. It’s easy for you to say “so what? Get over it. It’s not a big deal”

Ah! The callousness of the privileged! How well you mask your racism under a pretense of emotional equanimity! Those of us who have experienced over and over, however, can see the truth behind your pretend wisdom. You are not above the fray. You are the instigator.

This Refugee’s Heart Forever Longs

I was a refugee once. I knew nothing of an “American dream,” nor did I seek economic prosperity or opportunities. Nothing about your dollar called me. I came here because the army in my country was getting paid one million dollars by your government to kill people like me.

There are so many of us who came here, not to find a better life, but simply to survive. A better life? For life, period.

The road is dangerous for most. We know it well. You risk aggressions, robbery, rape, and death. You give yourself to the fates, the blessing of the elements, and the hope for the kindness of the brotherhood of humans.

You are grateful when you arrive, but you know the ordeal has just begun.

I was lucky to have been able to prove I was persecuted back home, for being a student of Philosophy, for working for war refugees, for speaking up for justice and a better world. Those were my crimes. That made me dangerous. I considered myself fortunate. I arrived to the US unscathed, and I stayed without once being detained. I went to court, and I was able to prove my case. I was one of less than 2% of Salvadorans granted political asylum. The Reagan administration was adamant to not grant any more than that, lest the public knew what he was really doing to my people. I was lucky. There were so many more more deserving, more in need, and more invisible.

The love for your family forces you to suffer all indignities in a place where you don’t feel alive. Between a cold hell and the fear of death, you take one more step each day towards a future where perhaps your children will feel like they have a place to call home.

For the love of them you leave the people you love and the land where your spirit thrives. For them you accept as normal a life of racism, police harassment, and the indignities of always being the lesser, the other, the silent forgotten. For the sake of your children you give up even the hope of truly belonging to the society you give your life and work to.

Your mind is forever now on the day to day issues of survival, raising children who forget your language and adopt the manners of the people who won’t ever see you as one of them. Your aspiration is to one day see your children happy. Your mind settles for the hope of one day being normal, but the heart forever longs for that place where you once felt a human being.

The Weapons of Humanity (pt. 2: The Wand)

The weapons of magick are inherent to the human being. This means that to every human person–be it male, female, child, queer, transgender or otherwise–belongs the wand. The wand gives direction to the will, and holds the power to create.

You have the power and the right to touch this world from any point where you operate and transform it, and create, and express. This power does not belong only to the pentagon or to the Kremlin. It does not belong to the armies and the soldiers. The wand is not a conventional weapon, and not only those who have guns can wield it.

It is the power of creation. It is the direct gift of Shiva, and you hold it like a lighting bolt; which means that you have the right and power to create your world, to do your Will on this earth as an expression of the will of God; and as the Book of the Law says, “no other shall say nay.”

These institutions of religion and politics we have created are taking it away from everyone else, with the pretext that they own the rights and means of creation. They keep populations ignorant of who they really are. They are keeping us from exercising our own abilities to grow in the exuberance of our spirit. They are keeping us hungry. They are keeping us sick and diseased with poisoned food, weakening drinks, and poisonous ideals.

The institutions we created to administer our power are keeping the majority of the people enslaved without power. Making us believe that the only way to subsist is to sell ourselves in slavery, and that we have to obey those who have the weapons, and the batons, and the tanks, and the holy books.

They make us believe that we are powerless, that we don’t have the wand; but the wand belongs to everyone. Which means that the power to create and destroy belongs to the people. Not to the armies, not to the politicians, not to the president.

The power of the wand is directed first with your libido. Liberate it. Own it. It is behind your creativity, your freedom of expression, and ultimately, it directs the manifestation of your pure divine will in this incarnation.
